Upscaling Images for Real Estate Listings: A Quick Guide

Real estate listings live and die by their photos, and resolution problems are a surprisingly common issue — especially with photos sourced from older listings, agent phones, or drone footage that's been compressed for easy sharing.

Where resolution problems tend to show up

• MLS and listing site requirements — many platforms specify minimum pixel dimensions (often 1024px or more on the longest side) for listing photos to display properly and enable zoom.
• Re-listed properties — photos from a previous listing years ago are sometimes reused, having been resized down for that era's web standards, which are lower than what's expected today.
• Photos shared via messaging apps — when photos are texted or shared through messaging platforms between agents and photographers, they're frequently compressed automatically in transit, and that compressed version sometimes becomes the one that gets used.

Why it's worth fixing

Listing photos are one of the first things a prospective buyer evaluates, often before they've decided whether to view the property in person. Soft, low-resolution images that can't be zoomed into read as a lower-effort or lower-quality listing, even if the property itself is well-presented — perception matters here as much as the technical spec.

Getting the best result

• Whenever possible, go back to the original photographer's file rather than a shared or downloaded copy, which is frequently already compressed.
• Upscale to meet, not just exceed, your platform's minimum — there's no benefit to massively overshooting a listing site's requirement, since most platforms will re-compress large uploads anyway.
• Use JPG for standard listing photos — it's the expected format for most listing platforms and keeps page load times reasonable for buyers browsing on mobile.

A quick pre-listing check

Before uploading, check that your photos meet your MLS or listing platform's stated minimum resolution. If older or reused photos fall short, upscaling them back up to the required minimum is a fast fix that doesn't require rescheduling a new photo shoot.
