What DPI actually means
DPI stands for "dots per inch" and describes how many printed dots are packed into each inch of a printed image. The digital equivalent, before it hits paper, is PPI — pixels per inch. The higher the number, the finer and sharper the print looks, because more image information is packed into the same physical space. For most photo prints, 300 DPI (or PPI, in the digital file) is considered the standard for a sharp, professional-looking result at normal viewing distance.
Working out the pixel dimensions you need
The formula is simple: multiply your desired print size in inches by 300.
- 4×6 inch print: 1200 × 1800 pixels
- 5×7 inch print: 1500 × 2100 pixels
- 8×10 inch print: 2400 × 3000 pixels
- 11×14 inch print: 3300 × 4200 pixels
- 16×20 inch print: 4800 × 6000 pixels

Can you get away with less than 300 DPI?

Upscaling to hit a print size
If your original photo is short of the pixel count you need, upscale it to reach the target dimensions before sending it to print. Aim to land at or slightly above the target pixel count rather than significantly over it — there's no benefit to massively overshooting your print resolution, and it just means a larger file to manage.
A quick sanity check before you print
Open your file and check its pixel dimensions (most image viewers and editors show this in the file info). Compare that against the chart above for your intended print size.
