Upscaling is simple to do but easy to get wrong in small ways that quietly undercut the final result. Here are the mistakes that come up most often, and how to sidestep each one.

1. Upscaling a screenshot of a screenshot

Every time an image is captured, shared, and re-captured, it loses a little more information. If you're about to upscale an image, trace it back to the most original version you can find — a camera roll photo instead of a screenshot of that photo texted to someone else, for instance.

2. Choosing 400% by default

More scale isn't automatically better. As covered in our 200% vs 400% guide, pushing a soft or small source image to the maximum scale can reveal the limits of the original more than a more modest, well-matched scale factor would.

3. Exporting as JPG when the image has text or hard edges

JPG compression is genuinely a poor match for text, logos, and line art — it introduces soft blockiness right around the edges that matter most. PNG avoids this entirely, at the cost of a larger file size that's rarely a real problem for most everyday uses.

4. Not cropping before upscaling

If you only need part of an image, upscaling the whole frame and cropping afterward wastes processing on pixels you're going to throw away, and spreads the enhancement pass's attention across the full image instead of the region you actually care about. Crop first, then upscale the crop.

5. Re-saving a JPG multiple times through the editing process

Each time a JPG is opened, edited, and re-saved as a JPG, it loses a little more quality — an effect known as generation loss. If your workflow involves several editing steps, work in a lossless format like PNG until the very final export.

6. Ignoring the source image's actual quality

Upscaling enhances and enlarges what's there — it can't add detail that was never captured. Going in with realistic expectations about a soft, low-quality, or heavily compressed source image leads to better decisions about scale factor and format, and less disappointment with the result.

7. Upscaling in multiple smaller steps instead of one clean pass

Running an image through several separate small upscales tends to compound softness at each step. A single, well-executed upscale to your target size — like the staged two-pass approach used for 400% scaling — generally holds detail better than multiple sequential upscales.

8. Not checking the result at full size before using it

A small preview thumbnail can hide softness or artifacts that become obvious once the image is actually used at full size — printed, projected, or displayed large. Always review your upscaled image at or near its final display size before finalizing.
